Mailchimp - AWS to GCP Migration

Working with the team at Mailchimp, Tensure provided both thought leadership as well as engineering capabilities for migrating and modernizing a workload after an acquisition. Tensure's deep capabilities with Google Cloud allowed us to move quickly.

The challenge

After Mailchimp acquired Chatitive the team began to assess the existing platform and how it would fit into the overall Mailchimp ecosystem. The team had to migrate the existing solution to Google Cloud, prepare for a drastic increase in users, and enable a rapid pace of development to meet the future product roadmap while still having to support existing customers and changing demand.

The solution

The team at Tensure partnered with Mailchimp engineering to migrate the existing solution from AWS and modernize it to a container-based architecture. The team reduced our migration time by utilizing managed services such as Cloud SQL, Cloud MemoryStore, and Cloud Storage. Additionally, all existing compute-based resources were containerized and moved to a GKE Cluster.

The results

The Tensure team completed the migration and reduced the operational burden of supporting the application. Utilizing GKE, manual workarounds were reduced, and the speed of software delivery increased rapidly. Improved rigor in infrastructure automation and DevOps practices allowed for smoother deployment processes. These changes allowed the team to prioritize the delivery of new features.

Taking a phased-based approach to the migration allowed the team to focus on solving future problems instead of worrying about a hard cutover causing an outage.
